Veterans Serving Veterans
Don Gerard, JR. CPA, CSDS
Don Gerard, Jr., CPA, CSDS, is a U.S. military veteran who served active duty in the United States Air Force in the 1980’s as an Air Force officer and C-130 pilot. Don is now 100% disabled, legally blind and has Multiple Sclerosis. However, he has not allowed his disability to control or define his life.
So, when he was medically disqualified from flying, blind in one eye and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Don left the Air Force in 1989 and entered the private sector where he worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for five years in both public practice and private industry. Additionally, Don spent another 10 years as a large corporate banker for Bank of America and US Bank, two of the nation’s largest financial institutions.In 2007 Don decided to leverage his 20+ years of experience and knowledge working in both the government & private sectors to start his first company, Land Shark Shredding, LLC, a 100% Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), that specialized in confidential information destruction. But in the first year of operation, Don lost his sight in his one good eye and became completely legally blind. However, his never give up attitude kicked-in once again and he found it within himself to continue to persevere & overcome life’s challenges.And for 14+ years Don very successfully grew and operated Land Shark, taking it from a start-up run from his house and garage in May of 2007 and turned it into a multimillion-dollar company, specializing in performing long-term U.S. federal government contract work, predominantly for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Over those years, Land Shark operated & managed well over 50 separate contracts across the United States.
However, in late 2020, Don sold his very successful company to another SDVOSB provider. But Don was not ready to retire.Drawing upon personal experience as a 30-year + patient himself in the VA health care system, Don knew firsthand what it felt like to directly interact and receive care from the VA. As a result, he decided he wanted to try to improve this experience and more tangibly touch the lives of his fellow veterans in a way he never could with his former company. For Don, this was very personal & he knew he could improve the VA patient experience and make a difference by starting a company that uniquely understood exactly what it felt like to be a veteran receiving care from the VA. He wanted to start a company that would provide service to and treat veterans as he would want to be treated himself by a service provider.
So, during the year leading up to the sale of Land Shark, Don decided he could continue serving his fellow veterans and his country by forming Veterans First Health Care, LLC (VFHC), a CVE approved SDVOSB joint-venture between Disabled Veterans First, LLC (a CVE approved SDVOSB entity owned by Don and his business partner Rett Dallas, MBA) and Commonwealth Home Health Care, a Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) located in Danville, VA, with the mission to provide world-class home oxygen service directly to veterans across the U.S.With VFHC, Don and his team have applied the same formula of success they used with Land Shark and other entities:
• Treat our fellow veterans as we would want to be treated ourselves;
• Always be an advocate for our fellow veterans care;
• Be an expert in our product/service line;
• Provide & deliver world-class service;
• Be proactive, responsive and sensitive to our fellow veterans needs/requirements;
• Always under promise & overdeliver;
• When we do make a mistake, acknowledge and rectify the situation without delay and
• Invest in our most important asset…our employees.Besides Don’s passion for his business and mission to serve his fellow veterans, he is also as passionate about his personal life. Don has been married for over 35-years to his high school sweetheart, has a son & daughter, who are both married and living in Bowling Green, Ky, and has one grandchild with another one the way, expected to arrive for Christmas, 2021!And despite his disabilities, Don is an avid runner, running several marathons, ½ marathons and relay races across the U.S., despite being completely legally blind. He enjoys other forms of personal fitness (weight training with a personal trainer and riding his Peloton), traveling, reading (i.e., ‘listening’ to audible books) and spending time with his family & friends.
